I wouldn't say the following is remarkable. In fact the below happens quite often. In fact I created the same effect myself in Hyjal.
We went into ICC today, and downed Rotface. Doesn't sound super amazing however we did it without what we'll call the "A Team" core if you will. The core of raiders we had been taking for a good while now. It's not a decision the Officers and Gm made, in fact they had decided it themselves. All folks in CT, attending the same college, all friends of course.
Our OT a protection paladin can only raid 2 days a week due to school obligations. So you could say he's pretty exempt from this, he doesn't make the times his classes are going.
However, a mage who makes great dps,a holy paladin that's stopped raiding and now plays his lowbie druid, another holy paladin that has never ending issues with his girlfriend about his playing time, and a priest that granted puts in the world of effort, but doesn't put out a world of heals. There's a dk that took more time to level up than a monkey takes trying to figure out an advanced algebra equation.
We had a predicament with the spot of OT for raids, good tanks have really low roll over. chances are if you're a good tank, your setup nicely in some guild and are happy there for the most part, if not you're able to quickly move on to a better guild without issue.
There's a million half ass tanks, then there's 500,000 mediocre tanks, and that leaves us with elite tanks, which can be counted on fingers and toes. Our OT we took has only been 80 2 weeks, his first toon, and he picks tanking from the get go. He's got a lot of holes to fill in as far as his gear and everything is concerened, but bless that little chimps heart, he's not failing, he's making some actual progress.
(He also wins some personal favor since he took the spec I use for the most part). He holds aggro well, but he still has some time to learn how to make THE THREAT. The 10k TPS Consistant Prot Paladin monster everyone talks about seeing lol. But in all honesty he can tighten some stuff up and put out a bit more TPS, He has a lot to learn in the way of situational and tactical awareness, gear needs some filling out. And perhaps some philosophy on the how's,why's and when's of his role.
It's a hope of mine that he'll not just be perceptive, but really take in my information I give him and make use of it.
To even more paint the picture, it was his first week of ICC ever. Hadn't even known about the Reputation Rings. But he was gettin it done. Occasionally I'd yell out in vent for him to do this or that, or something like "Get up there lay a consecrate and get over here." With my character jumping where he should end up.
I'm not sure if he followed all of it, but it certainly seemed as though he was taking some of my ques and going through what I asked of him. (At some points when I try to direct people like him, I wonder how seriously they take my advice, since they don't know of my Paladin or it's exploits.)
So we had filled gaps with new people we recruited, some favorable on dps, but not so much on vent, some who aren't on the echelon of smart making you'd hope. They were all folks that were new, not exactly stellar etc.
But we downed Rotface with 3 attempts, something the prementioned "A TEAM" couldn't provide. There was a bit of a feeling that it was amazing, unexpected and what have you. But it's something I feel we all should expect every time we step into a raid instance. Was I quite suprised, oh yeah. I knew it was going to happen this night however, I was sure set. You can tell when your raid group is going to destroy a boss. We got Rotface down insanely lower our first few attempts, one hunter even commenting "I even got to use killshot!"
That was the medicine, the motivation. You taste blood and you go for it. These new and undergeared folks outperformed these better geared veteran people. They did it, you couldn't be more proud of a set of people in one place.
From playing hockey for a majority of my life, and a portion of that in the highest level of preprofessional play, I've seen these moments before, I've lived them and have had to deal with them.
The yell out of "I got to use killshot!" might have been the nail in the coffin. So often when I played, it usually just took a well placed goal, or a clutch save I made that was the rally cry. You go from seeing a morose team that's quiet to this team of people that are quite vocal and just look quite motivated. That group of people is very hard to stop.
It was a good night, we downed a new boss, got some loot and went home :)
