Summer

So what's been going on? It's summer and in younger years that meant "time to get hammered." But it's turned into more "grown up things" as it tends to get pegged as. Some staples of my life have continued however.
-Garden and Horticulture in general: The garden is bigger yet again, each year I expand it a good foot or two. We always end up growing more, and growing better. This year is no exception as I've constructed a green house that's roughly 3x the size of the one I made last year. This whole part of my life is one of the few things that I can really get lost in during the morning and then when I stop, I realize that the sun is going down because it's 7pm. Obviously at the beginning of spring the work is a lot of lifting and muscling things. But later on you still end up busting your ass with other things. Turning soil each week. Maintaining our huge ass compost pile (easily a few hundred pounds of refuse, soil, food scraps and so on). Digging weeds, Pounding in posts with sledge hammers, cleaning out and reforming ponds each year. While you really do end up doing less lifting after the initial stuff, the heat starts becoming a factor, and that alone strips energy.
Then halfway through summer I start over again. As I tend to grow things quite quickly, I end up having to dig up the plants that have done their work, return the soil, and replenish it, then put in new crops.
The end result is what has really helped me with my patience. Putting in tons of work, sweat and hope, and at the end of it all seeing the fruits of my labor literally. Huge tomatos that I can pick off the vine to use on burgers, incredible salsa that everyone seems to fucking fiend for.
Refreshing Radishes (no i didn't just think that line up), beans to french cut, onions and garlic to cook with hashbrowns. All this shit that not only saves my family money but in the end I get this sense of accomplishment that all this work I did panned out to make some healthy, and good food. A store bought tomato and one grown in your backyard don't even come close in taste. It goes without a hint on which one tastes better.

The other is sports. I don't play hockey anymore but I do go out twice a week to play baseball, In years past I've also went out with my soccer ball and cleats by myself to really just run for a few hours and take shots, I just find mindless jogging or running to be entirely too boring to do.

Fishing is another great thing I enjoy during the summer. We went out today in fact to a close by lake. We fished at their "fishing pier" which of course only scores you dinkers, but it was Nicks first time fishing ever, and it's a location guaranteed to get bites all day. Nick had little luck for most of the day. He kept getting robbed of his bait, and I was the one that had to put a bit of worm onto the hook for him. To be completely candid, I didn't really mind it. I knew I could cast out and catch fish whenever I decided to. But for whatever reason I was more interested in seeing him score his first catch. He was getting monster bites too, and finally it happened. While as much as he tried to subdue it, there was clearly an expression of accomplishment, and of course we were all there to congratulate him about it. A far cry from Wii Fishing indeed lol.
He ended up catching 3 as memory serves, he at times openly admitted he wasn't having fun. However when I got onto this streak of bringing them in, he instantly started back up again. I think for him it'll be one of those things that he has to be sitting at home thinking about it later on to really appreciate it. Of course it's no fuckin fun to go out to a lake and catch nothing, but even if you just catch a few, the bigger part is just enjoying yourself really. Being out by the lake, river or whatever and taking everything in around you. A few times I stopped fishing just to look around, and saw a fish flip out of the water to snag a bug. Whenever I saw it happen I'd get loud "thats a fucking huge ass fish!" It was relaxing for me.

I really would just like to be working right now so that I could do more of what I love. I'd love to go take my ass out on a lake and fish all the "honey pots" I know of on everyone of the nearby lakes. Or drive my own self out to play baseball instead of relying on my sister, or having to put up with my brother and his droning about whatever pointless shit it is he blathers about.

It was a decent day though, enjoyed it alot.
